 Valuing Veterinary Volunteers!

Izzat, one of the 5 UPM Bintulu Veterinary Students, watching over a kitten while volunteering during our month-long IKANO stint. Universiti Putra Malaysia, the only university offering Veterinary Courses in Malaysia has, over the years, provided their students with invaluable learning experiences as well as provided constant support and help to the SPCA. 5 UPM Students from the Bintulu, Sarawak Veterinary Campus were sent to the SPCA for 5 weeks of Practical Training & Volunteering, offering assistance not just at the SPCA Animal Shelter with routine Kennel duties, but also during outreach events and most importantly, at SPCA’s Klinik Kembiri.

CRUELTY ALERT!

This is a little, beautiful, neglected dog sleeping where she slept for months (left) and the picture on the right shows where she was left tied with a short chain, for a month without food or water. Repeated reports led the SPCA to find this dog on 3 separate locations, after 3 separate warnings, continuously left tortured with neglect. At only 5 months old then, Darcy (as she is now known), was left without food, shelter and water by her owner for months. Rescued later by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), she was brought to the SPCA for recuperation. Tiny, extremely malnourishedand afraid of human contact, Darcy’s owners are now being prosecuted. The investigation continues.

This is Darcy today. This sweet Doberman Cross is strong, healthy and free now. She is currently undergoing obedience training with us at the SPCA, and will be put up for adoption end of this month.

A Recommendation by WMW
You Get What You Give …
Food.Arts.Travel (F.A.T)

** non-halal **

Tucked away in a hidden area, I would have not found this place on my own as I am not familiar with Sg. Way at all (but I am now, after the repeated visits). “What? It’s at Plaza Seri Setia? There’s a plaza there??? It specialises in Hokkien dishes??? You mean we are eating Hokkien Mee?” Well, that was my initial reaction but now I know better! To get to this place, you have to walk through a lane of small stalls. There’s only one area (I think!) that has a lane of small stalls nestled in between the row of shophouses there. You can see the plaza at the back and if you look up once you go through, you’ll see Hua Xing on the 1st floor (accessible by staircase/elevator). When you find this place, you’ve basically found the hidden gem!

There are several dishes that I have repeatedly ordered as they are good stuff and old habits die hard I suppose. Here are my faves…

Curry Chicken Bun (RM28/USD8) is really good. I just love dipping the bun into the tasty curry gravy. The bun is crisp on the outside and soft on inside! I can definitely mop up all the gravy with the bun! However, if you want to have this dish, do take note that it’s only available on weekends and you must order a day in advance.

Faith is irrepressible. Whether it’s whispered or shouted, it ignites a passion that must be shared, and that spark burns brightly throughout pop artist Krystal Meyers’ new release, Make Some Noise.

It’s a potent set of songs that find the talented 20-year old exploring new musical territory while continuing to serve up the kind of insightful lyrics that made her first two albums so groundbreaking.

“This music is fun and energetic and is going to be fun on stage,” says Meyers, who is already performing some of her new songs in concert to enthusiastic response. “It’s a different kind of energy. Some of the songs like ‘S.O.S.’ and ‘My Freedom’ are more
guitar-driven, but there are other songs like ‘Shine,’ are totally 80’s-inspired, fun, dance, pop/rock music. It’s a diverse record that defines my different musical layers.”

Meyers first burst on the scene with her self-titled Essential Records debut in 2005, spawning her breakthrough hit “Anticonformity,” a song she wrote at camp before entering ninth grade. Her debut set spawned four top ten singles and also launched her career abroad. Her sophomore album, Dying For a Heart, solidified Meyers’ stature as one of the top artists in Christian music—earning her a second Dove nomination in the female vocalist of the year category–and boosting her audience overseas, earning her major pop star status in Japan.

What I find more fascinating than the fact that monsters may, possibly exists is that there are actually people out there who ticked ‘yes’ on their University course application to study them (monsters that is).  Hey, but I won’t knock them since I haven’t tried it. But, because of these academicians, couch potatoes like me get to learn from the stuff they uncover. So as I sit, glued to my TV set, here’s the facts on Cryptozoology which comes courtesy of The History Channel.

The term Cryptozoology was coined in 1959 by Lucien Blancou in a book dedicated to the foremost researcher of unknown animals, Bernard Heuvelmans. As the term has now become a standard part of modern vocabulary and appears in almost all dictionaries, it is defined as “the science of hidden animals”. It combines the three Greek words: kryptos, zoon and logos, which mean, respectively, hidden, animal, and discourse.

In 1955, Heuvelman published On the Track of Unknown Animals and the new discipline was born. By 1982, the International Society of Cryptozoology was founded at a meeting held at the Smithsonian Institution. According to this meeting, Cryptozoology concerns “the possible existence of known animals in areas where they were not supposed to occur, either now or in the past), as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or recent past…What makes an animal of interest to cryptozoology…is that it is unexpected”. To be an animal of interest, it also must have at least one trait “truly singular, unexpected, paradoxical, striking, emotionally upsetting and thus be capable of mystification” according to Bernard Heuvelman.
